The Japanese invasion of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War left a deep legacy of resentment among many Chinese, fueled by well-documented atrocities. Among the most heinous and lesser-known was the Imperial Japanese Army’s covert biochemical weapons program, deceptively named the "Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department." Led by Dr. Shiro Ishii, this unit subjected an estimated 3,000 to 250,000 innocent men, women, and children to brutal experiments, conducted by Japan’s top medical students and staff. To develop germ warfare capabilities, prisoners were deliberately infected with deadly diseases like anthrax, plague, and cholera, often enduring agonizing vivisections without anesthesia to study the diseases’ real-time effects. Shockingly, unlike their Nazi counterparts, most perpetrators escaped justice. In a bid to avoid Soviet prosecution, Dr. Shiro Ishii and his team traded their experimental data to the Americans for immunity during the Tokyo Trials, evading accountability for their crimes against humanity.
